BALLOONS ABOVE has been operating since 1994. Our chief pilot Jason Harm has over 30 years local knowledge and more than 13 years hot air

ballooning experience. We offer you a unique morning's adventure in the Lockyer Valley coupled with our genuine country hospitality.

When did passenger ballooning start?

Ballooning started as a sport for a few enthusiasts in the USA and England and spread to Australia in the early 70's. The Lockyer Valley was the 1st commercial Hot Air Ballooning operation in Queensland in the 80's, due to the safety of the area and the scenic views. Now it is possible to go ballooning in many countries of the world and experience the uniwue pleasure of floating slowly over the earth in a traditional wicker basket.

Can anyone do it?

Absolutely! As long as you can stand up for an hour, you can experience the magic of a lighter than air flight. Our passengers help with the

setting up and after flight packing up. After your morning's adventure waits a superb chicken and champagne French style brunch.

But I don't like heights!

Flying in a high-sided balloon basket is not like standing on the balcony of a high rise. You don't get that vertigo feeling, it is more as if the landscape is unfolding beneath you and because you are moving with the wind drift, there is no wind blowing. The basket does not rock or sway.

Why do we have to get up so early in the morning?

Balloons need cool, stable, calm winds to operate most effectively. As the sun rises the morning air is calm and tranquil, perfect conditions needed for Ballooning.

What to wear and bring?

Light, casual clothes similar to hiking. Sunglasses, maybe a cap, walking shoes or joggers and in winter - a jacket may be required. A camera and money for souvenirs. White clothing is not recommended.

Who controls balloons and balloonists safety?

The civil Aviation Safety Authority controls ballooning in Australia and the rules are very strict these days. All pilots are licensed by CASA and have to have regular medicals and check flights just like 747 captains. The

balloons have to be inspected every 100 hours to make sure they are airworthy.
