Driving is on the left-hand side of the road. There are many one-way streets in Brisbane and the speed limit in built up areas is 50km per hour unless signed. Highways can be 100 or 110 KM per hour. Be aware that speed limits for country and city driving vary from state to state. Seat belts are required by law in all states and must be worn when the vehicle is in motion. Speed and red light cameras are in use. The legal alcohol limit for driving is 0.05. |
| Tourists can drive in Australia with a valid driving licence, providing it's for the same class of vehicle. An International Drivers Licence is only valid with a current drivers licence. If your licence is not in English, you must carry a translation. |
| December to April brings the wet season in tropical northern areas and some roads in outback regions may be closed. |
| 4WDs may be needed for more remote areas and care should be taken by inexperienced drivers. |
