brisbane swimming

Swimming is a healthy and inexpensive activity. There are thousands of kilometres of sandy beaches, rivers, rock pools, lakes and waterfalls. But swimming can be dangerous for those not used to the surf.

Australian beaches can have strong currents called 'rips'. If you find yourself caught in one, the important thing is NOT to panic, remain calm, float with the current and raise one hand in the air to alert  lifeguards you need help, then wait. To escape rip, swim diagonally across the rip, not against it!or aware of unique Australian dangerous currents.

Most major beaches are patrolled by surf lifesavers:

    • always swim between the red and yelow striped flags.
    • a solid red flag means - danger, keep out of the water
